I loved Xela and the school so much that I came back in December to spend Christmas here!\n\nBefore arriving, I had only studied Spanish for a few months in Taipei and could barely hold a conversation. After three weeks of classes combined with a full Spanish-speaking homestay, I was able to communicate with locals and confidently continue traveling through Latin America. I could handle restaurants, transportation, and daily conversations. This school truly made a huge difference in my Spanish.\n\nMy teacher was experienced, patient, and supportive. By the third week, we were already having conversations fully in Spanish about culture and social topics. It was both challenging and rewarding.\n\nThe school is about a 20-minute walk from Central Park, in a quiet and comfortable area with adorable cats and dogs. The director Sary is very caring, and Ilsy organizes fun activities like salsa dancing and local trips, so you\u2019ll never feel bored.\n\nI highly recommend the homestay option if you want to improve quickly. My host grandparents became like family \u2014 they took wonderful care of me, adjusted to my eating habits, and even welcomed me back for a beautiful Christmas celebration.\n\nXela is a great place to study Spanish \u2014 less touristy than Antigua, less chaotic than the capital, and full of friendly people and great caf\u00e9s. Just an FYI to others reading this. I attended the school in March\/April\/May time 2025.\n\nI studied at this school for 6 weeks. I orginally budgeted for 10 weeks, but I had to leave early due to an emergency back in Texas. My goal was to learn the language for career purposes. If you are here for career purposes plan for at least 4 weeks minimum. Ideally, I would recommend 12 weeks if you want to use Spanish in your career.\n\nYou can study here for 1 week, but I would recommend 2 weeks if you are here to learn Spanish for travel purposes in Central America.\n\nMy experience here was exceptional. I stayed at a homestay (homestays do vary), and it was fantastic. I got to really know the family and you get to really experience the Guatemalan culture in Xela. You can get a room at the school (hostel style or share a room), but you are best going out of your comfort zone and going to do the homestay.\n\nI studied for the max 25 hours a day. This was extremely difficult for me. I made this choice, not the schools fault. 20 hours is the perfect amount in my opinion.\n\nLocation wise, I like the location because is its easy to save your money here and not throw it away at the pub on the weekends. the pub is 15 minutes away (expart bar). You feel more immersed in the culture at this particular location. You are close enough to everything but far away enough from everything. I think this is the perfect location for those trying to save their dollars (or euros). The scenery is amazing since the school sits on a hilltop.\n\nIf you rent a room at the school, grocery shopping can get annoying 15 minute walk but that is just part of the schools location. Enjoy the cityscape while you do stuff here. If you are at a homestay like me, I just supplement grocery shopped once a week (soda, 6 pack of beers, etc.).\n\nActivities were amazing, the potluck was the most memorable experience of the school. I went to two and it was just so amazing. I would post a photo of the potluck, but I want to protect people's privacy.\n\nOh, and best of all my Spanish has improved immensely, my job prospects in Texas have opened up soooo many doors. I certainly got my return in investment for the time and fees at the school. Sary M. (the director\/principal) was extremely friendly and very easy to work with. She has exceptional communication skills.\n\nFinal remarks, go to this school if you want to learn Spanish. Really great Spanish school, highly recommend.\n\nThe owner, Sary, is very friendly and helpful. The school itself is cosy and tucked away in a quiet residential neighbourhood not that far from the city centre. I preferred this. It is more immersive and authentic, which is what you need if you're a serious student. Before long, it feels more like a family than a school.\n\nThe teacher quality here is high and the school organises plenty of activities if you're interested. Your Spanish will certainly improve.\n\nAs for homestays, Miguel de Cervantes also organises much better ones than the other Spanish schools. My host family was astonishingly kind. He was able to easily adjust his instruction to meet my level of Spanish and short time frame (only 1 week!)\n\nIn addition to top quality instruction, the school offers cultural activities in the afternoons! I loved how the activities were varied based on our interests!\n\nFinally, the school offers many options for lodging. You can stay at the school (which is very nice!) or with a host family. The quality of the teaching was excellent - massive shout out to Fernando, who was brilliant and very patient - and great value for money. The staff at the school, such as Sary and Ilsy are very friendly and we also really enjoyed the extra-curricular activities such as the salsa class and hike to Laguna de Chicabal. I also really recommend the homestay experience to consolidate your learnings and learn about Guatemalan culture.
